PNP warns cops vs indiscriminate firing: Pull the trigger, lose the badge
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday reminded police officers anew of the one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing ahead of the New Year revelry.
In a statement, PNP acting chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the one-strike policy is part of the police force’s security measures for the holiday season.
“All PNP personnel are reminded to observe the highest level of discipline and professionalism in the handling of firearms. Any act of reckless or celebratory gunfire is a serious violation of duty and will not be tolerated under any circumstance,” he added.
Nartatez said police officers found guilty of indiscriminate firing shall face immediate administrative sanctions and criminal liability in accordance with existing laws, without warning or second chances.
“This includes dismissal from the service and the filing of appropriate criminal cases, as warranted,” the PNP acting chief said.
Nartatez said immediate and decisive action is required from all unit commanders.
“Personnel involved in indiscriminate firing will be relieved and placed under preventive suspension at once, pending investigation. Command responsibility is absolute – every level must be accountable to uphold discipline and safeguard public trust in the PNP,” he said.
Nartatez also called on police officers to set an example of responsibility and restraint by not engaging in indiscriminate firing of their guns during the New Year revelry.
“This policy underscores the PNP’s firm commitment to protecting lives and ensuring public safety during a period meant for peace, not preventable harm,” he added.
Earlier, the PNP warned police personnel and gun owners of a one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing during the holiday season.
Rafael Vicente Calinisan, National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) vice chairperson and executive officer, said the practice of the (PNP to seal the service firearms of police officers with masking tape during the holidays was unnecessary. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
