Teodoro: China’s actions around Taiwan undermine peace, stability
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Wednesday expressed concern with China’s military actions around Taiwan, saying these undermine regional peace and stability and further strain an already fragile geopolitical environment.
“Basic principles of self-restraint must be observed, and the rule of international law must not be distorted,” Teodoro said in a statement.
“The Philippines underscores the importance of upholding international law and regional norms, including the principles of peaceful management of disputes,” he added.
On Monday, China staged live-fire drills around the island of 23 million people and deployed troops, warships, combat aircraft and artillery for its "Justice Mission 2025" exercises.
The drills began after the United States announced an $11.1 billion arms package to Taiwan.
“We reaffirm our support for a free, open, stable, and rules-based Indo Pacific, where differences are resolved through peaceful means without deception, coercion, or intimidation,” Teodoro said.
For its part, Taipei's defense ministry previously said Taiwan can respond rapidly to any sudden Chinese attack with all units able to operate under a decentralized mode of command without awaiting orders from its senior leadership. — Joahna Lei Casilao/RF, GMA Integrated News
