LTO issues show cause order vs viral ‘traffic enforcer’ for reckless driving

LTO show cause order traffic enforcer reckless driving

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order (SCO) against a suspected traffic enforcer and motorcycle rider who went viral for alleged reckless driving and other offenses.

In a statement on Sunday, the LTO said it ordered the rider and owner of the Honda motorcycle to appear before the LTO – Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on January 15, Thursday at 10 a.m. to submit a verified or sworn explanation.

The motorcycle rider and driver may be held accountable for reckless driving; failure to use signals on starting, stopping, or turning; and failure to use a motorcycle helmet.

This was after a viral video showed the rider – who wore a vest with “traffic enforcer” markings – driving the motorcycle but failed to use signal lights while making turns.

His back rider also wore a “traffic enforcer” vest and did not wear a motorcycle helmet.

LTO chief and Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao reminded the public to follow traffic rules and regulations on road safety and avoid any actions that might endanger themselves and other motorists.

He said the motorcycle rider should also explain why his driver’s license should not be revoked or suspended for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver’s license of the motorcycle rider was preventively suspended for 90 days. The rider was also told to surrender the driver’s license on or before his scheduled LTO hearing.

The Honda motorcycle was also placed under an LTO alarm to prevent any transactions concerning the vehicle.

Lacanilao said failure to appear and submit an explanation will mean that the motorcycle rider will be waiving his right to be heard and that the complaint will be resolved based on the LTO’s evidence. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
