Torreon files counter-affidavit on obstruction of justice complaint
Lawyer Israelito Torreon on Friday filed his counter-affidavit on an obstruction of justice complaint filed against him by the police in connection to the apprehension of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy in 2024.
“Nakapag-oath na ako at na-submit ko na ‘yung counter-affidavit (I have taken my oath and submitted my counter-affidavit),” he said in an ambush interview.
According to Torreon, he was only performing his duty as the legal counsel of Quiboloy, who police authorities were seeking to arrest at that time.
He said this was enough reason for him to not be indicted for obstruction of justice.
“Otherwise, any and all lawyers who will be defending accused persons would be liable or would be indicted for obstruction of justice,” Torreon said.
Torreon’s legal counsel, Jimmy Bondoc, said there was an instance where Torreon and then Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief Nicolas Torre were discussing the legality of the execution and service of the warrant.
“Nag uusap po sila noon at marami pong, very peaceful at mahinahon ang pagbabalikan nila ng mga katanungan at sagot. However, despite the legality and peacefulness of that exchange, it has now evolved into a case,” he said.
(They were talking back then, and their back-and-forth of questions and answers very peaceful and calm. However, despite the legality and peacefulness of that exchange, it has now evolved into a case.)
Torreon also questioned why the complaint was only recently filed against him.
“Siguro dahil na dismiss na ‘yung ibang mga kaso ko pinilit pa rin ito. During the time of General Torre, this is not one of the cases that he filed against me,” he said.
(Maybe because my other cases were already dismissed, they still pushed this. During the time of General Torre, this was not one of the cases that he filed against me.)
“But since this has been filed already, we took it best to prepare a good counter-affidavit, hoping and praying that the case would be dismissed,” he added.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
