Japan, Australia offer condolences over Basilan ferry sinking
Japan and Australia on Monday expressed their sympathies to the families of those affected by the ferry sinking off Basilan that left at least 15 people dead.
“My heartfelt sympathies go out to all those affected by the sinking of the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 ferry in the southern Philippines. Japan stands with you during these difficult times and hopes for the swift rescue and recovery of the passengers and crew members,” Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya said in a post on X.
The inter-island ferry M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, which was carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members, was en route to Jolo island in Sulu province from Zamboanga City when it sank shortly after midnight, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
Rescuers were able to save 316 passengers. The cause of the incident has yet to be determined.
Australian Ambassador Marc Innes-Brown also offered his condolences.
“Our thoughts are with those killed and injured, as well as their loved ones, following the ferry sinking in the southern Philippines last night. Our deepest condolences,” he said.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
