PCG deploys technical divers, ROV for M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 search, rescue ops

Technical divers and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) are now deployed for the search and rescue operations in the sunken M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 in Basilan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Wednesday.

In a statement, Coast Guard spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said the deployment aims to locate the vessel and the remaining missing passengers.

“PCG Technical Divers were dispatched to conduct underwater search operations in identified areas of interest, while the ROV was employed to assist in deep-water inspections and enhance search capabilities in areas that pose risks to human divers,” she said.

According to the PCG, the use of ROV enables the PCG to safely and effectively survey submerged areas with limited visibility and challenging sea conditions.

Data gathered through the advanced underwater technology provides critical visual information to guide ongoing search efforts and operational decision-making, the agency added.

The PCG stressed its commitment to exhausting all available resources and capabilities in the conduct of search and rescue operations.

According to Office of Civil Defense - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (OCD-BAR) on Tuesday, the reported death toll in the sinking of M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ferry has increased to 19.

M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 on Sunday departed from Port of Zamboanga City for Jolo, Sulu but it submerged in Basilan waters on Monday.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday clarified that there were 344 people—317 passengers and 27 crew members—on board the ship when the incident happened.

Originally, 332 passengers were expected to board M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 but 15 did not proceed with their scheduled trip.

Based on the tally of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday, 18 people were dead and 10 were still missing after sinking of the ship. A total of 316 people have been rescued.

The DOTr has grounded the entire fleet of Aleson Shipping Lines as authorities conduct a maritime safety and inspection audit. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
