LAPU-LAPU CITY — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed confidence that the tourism industry of ASEAN member states will continue to prosper

Marcos’ speech at the opening ceremony of the ASEAN Tourism Forum was delivered by Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, as the President’s public engagements have been limited on medical advice following his recent bout with diverticulitis.

“As we look to the future, the Philippines invites all ASEAN member states and partners to move with us and be part of this journey,” Marcos said.

“I share with you the sense of confidence and optimism that ASEAN tourism will continue to thrive. Let our discussions lead to actions, and our cooperation bring lasting benefits to our peoples,” he added.

Frasco noted that the President deeply regrets not being able to attend the opening ceremony in person.

First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos attended the event at the Mactan Shrine in the President’s place.

The President also highlighted how tourism uplifts not just destinations, but also lives.

“It supports Filipino farmers, fisherfolk, creatives, transport providers, hospitality service providers, and entrepreneurs,” Marcos said.

“We strive to ensure that our local communities truly benefit from showcasing our heritage and highlighting the unique identity of our people,” he added.

Meanwhile, ASEAN’s flagship travel trade event, TRAVEX 2026, was also launched, gathering 271 buyers from 50 countries, 124 sellers, and 222 exhibitors at the newly purpose-built Mactan Expo Center.

“TRAVEX showcases the diversity and maturity of ASEAN tourism offerings. It is a platform that brings together not only destinations and products, but also aspirations, partnerships, and shared responsibility for the future of tourism in our region,” Frasco said.
