Nartatez: PNP has zero-tolerance policy vs hazing
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday underscored its zero-tolerance policy against hazing, noting that all police units should ensure strict compliance with anti-hazing policies.
This came after the entire Regional Mobile Force Battalion 14-B was relieved from their post following a viral hazing incident in Lamitan, Basilan.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. warned that any personnel who could be involved in hazing may be slapped with administrative and criminal charges, including dismissal from police service.
''As an institution, the PNP enforces a zero-tolerance policy against hazing. Personnel found to have participated in, organized, or facilitated hazing activities are subject to administrative sanctions, including dismissal from service, and may also face criminal liability in accordance with the law,'' Nartatez said in a statement.
''All PNP units are directed to ensure strict compliance with anti-hazing policies, conduct proper monitoring during training and initiation periods, and immediately report and address any suspected violations, reflecting the PNP’s duty to safeguard personnel and enforce the rule of law,'' he added.
Nartatez stressed that hazing has no place in the organization, and violators will be held accountable without exception.
He noted that under Republic Act No. 8049, as amended by RA 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Law, any act that inflicts physical or psychological harm, injury, or suffering during initiation or welcoming practices is illegal and punishable under Philippine laws.
The PNP earlier said that a total of 70 officers and men were affected by the relief order, including 12 non-commissioned officers that directly participated in the alleged hazing of fellow policemen during their reception rites as newly deployed troops in Lamitan.
Authorities said the incident happened between 12 noon and 6 p.m. last week, February 6. They said a total of 129 cops are expected to lodge complaints against members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 14-B. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
