Marcos erred in 2022 choice? Palace says Sharon's opinion may be the same as most Filipinos

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said megastar Sharon Cuneta is likely not alone in her opinion about President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s choice of running mate in the 2022 elections, which was the subject of her banter during a gala event on Thursday night with the First Family and some of the country's famous showbiz personalities.

At the event dubbed "An Evening with the Stars: A Gala Celebrating the Stars Who Continue to Light Our Way" on Thursday night, Cuneta engaged Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos with friendly jest while on stage before singing their request.

"Sir, I have only one vice president... My date tonight. Mali your choice, 'no?" Cuneta said, drawing laughter from the audience at the Foro de Intramuros in Manila.

(You made the wrong choice, didn't you?)

"Okay, okay. Let's move on," she added.

"Basta, Mr. President, you have my support," Cuneta said.

On Friday's briefing at the Palace, Castro said the President smiled at the joke.

“Kung iyon po ang opinion ni Miss Sharon Cuneta at malamang karamihan ng ating mga kababayan, iyan din ang nararamdaman. So, opinion po iyan ni Sharon Cuneta,” she said.

(If that is the opinion of Miss Sharon Cuneta and probably most of our countrymen feel the same. So, that is Sharon Cuneta’s opinion.)

“At nakita po natin na napangiti lang ang ating Pangulo,” Castro added.

(And we saw that our President just smiled.)

Asked if the President made a comment or agreed with Cuneta's comment, Castro said, “Wala po. Nagandahan lamang siya sa awiting 'Bituing Walang Ningning.’”

(Nothing. He just liked the song 'Bituing Walang Ningning.’)

Cuneta went to the event with her husband, Senator Francis Pangilinan, who ran for vice president as the running mate of then-Vice President Leni Robredo in the 2022 presidential elections.
