CIDG launches probe into controversial vlogger's alleged use of police uniform

Vlogger Norman Mangusin (Francis Leo Marcos) allegedly used police uniform

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) confirmed Tuesday that it is investigating controversial vlogger Norman Mangusin, also known as Francis Leo Marcos, over a viral photo of him donning a police uniform.

“We are investigating the case,” CIDG chief Major General Robert Alexander Morico told GMA Integrated News in a text message.

The CIDG, however, refused to confirm reports that a subpoena had already been issued against the vlogger.

“I cannot give you the details; we are on the investigation stage at this point,” Morico added.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) last week called out Mangusin, and raised the possibility of filing raps for “usurpation of authority and illegal use of uniforms or insignia” after his photo circulated online in which he could be seen in a “ceremonial blue” police uniform.

“Hindi exemption ang pagiging vlogger. Ang batas ay pantay na pinapatupad at ang uniporme ay simbolo ng lehitimong awtoridad,” PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño earlier said.

(Being a vlogger does not get one an exemption. The law is enforced in a fair manner and the [PNP] uniform is a symbol of legitimate authority.)

The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) also took up the cudgels for the PNP.

“In solidarity with the whole PNP, the NAPOLCOM will initiate CRIMINAL charges against Mangusin. Do not use the PNP uniform for clout. You will surely pay for it," NAPOLCOM vice chairman and executive officer Atty. Rafael Vicente Calinisan said.

In response, Mangusin in a  statement claimed that the photo had been digitally edited, and leaked online by his detractors. —KG, GMA Integrated News
