What happened to cops behind murders of Kian delos Santos, other EJK victims?

Of the thousands of individuals killed during the Duterte administration’s controversial drug war, only a few have received justice so far.

According to Oscar Oida’s report in “24 Oras” on Tuesday, three police officers were found guilty of murder in the death of then 17-year-old Kian delos Santos. They were sentenced to reclusion perpetua, or up to four years of imprisonment, aside from paying damages to Kian’s family.

Meanwhile, another cop was found guilty of murder, torture, and planting evidence in the deaths of Carl Angelo Arnaiz and Reynaldo “Kulot” de Guzman.

On the other hand, four police officers were convicted of homicide for the deaths of Luis and Gabriel Bonifacio,  father and son, during a drug buy-bust operation.

All of the law enforcers claimed that they were simply doing their job.

On the other hand, former president Rodrigo Duterte is now facing the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Depending on the outcome of the confirmation of charges hearings, it will be decided if he will finally stand trial for his bloody campaign against illegal drugs.

Government records showed that 7,640 drug suspects were killed in police operations from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2022. But this figure is far from the 30,000 deaths tallied by watchdogs, the report said. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
