UN calls for investigation into deadly strike on school in Iran

GENEVA — The UN human rights office on Tuesday urged what it called the forces behind a deadly attack on a girls' school in Iran to investigate and share insights into the incident, without saying who it believed was responsible.

"The High Commissioner (Volker Turk) calls for a prompt, impartial and thorough investigation into the circumstances of the attack. The onus is on the forces that carried out the attack to investigate it," UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told a Geneva press briefing.

Airline stocks in Asia, Europe slide as passengers scramble to leave Middle East

SYDNEY/HONG KONG/LONDON — Airline stocks in Asia and Europe extended losses on Tuesday as the US and Israeli air war against Iran escalated, with carriers monitoring fuel price spikes and passengers scrambling to find flights or alternative routes out of the Middle East.

Major Gulf hubs including Dubai, the world's busiest international airport and normally handling more than 1,000 flights a day, remained closed for a fourth day, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded.

Global energy costs soar as Iran crisis disrupts shipping, oil and gas production

LONDON — Global oil and gas prices jumped on Tuesday as the US-Israeli war on Iran halted energy exports from the Middle East, with Tehran attacking ships and energy facilities, closing navigation in the Gulf and forcing production stoppages from Qatar to Iraq.

Oil prices have risen more than 15% since Friday and the benchmark Brent Crude contract LCOc1 gained 6% on Tuesday to above $82 per barrel, the highest since July 2024, while European gas prices have soared 40% adding to a 40% surge on Monday. Sugar, fertilizer and soy prices have all risen too.

US says it wouldn’t deliberately target a school after Iran said over 160 killed in strike

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio said US forces "would not deliberately target a school" after Iranian state media reported over 160 were killed in a strike on a girls' school on the first day of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

The Israeli government has committed to providing lifetime support to the family of the Filipino caregiver killed in a missile attack in Tel Aviv, Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Dana Kursh said Tuesday.

According to a report by Super Radyo dzBB’s Carlo Mateo, Kursh grew emotional as she conveyed her condolences to the family of Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera.

De Vera was killed by an Iranian retaliatory strike after Israel and the US launched an attack on Iran that has killed hundreds of people.

Netanyahu: US-Israeli conflict with Iran won't last more than years

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war against Iran was "not going to take years," as the conflict widened with Israel again attacking the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and Iran striking Gulf states that host US bases.

Netanyahu rejected the idea of the conflict lasting years, like previous wars in the region.

"I said it could be quick and decisive. It may take some time, but it's not going to take years. It's not an endless war," Netanyahu said on Fox News' "Hannity" program on Monday.

Marcos: Gov't monitoring Middle East tension's impact on remittances

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Tuesday his administration is also monitoring the impact of the Middle East tension on the remittances of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

At a press conference, Marcos said that aside from security and diplomatic concerns, the government is also finding ways to safeguard the steady flow of dollars, which sustain millions of Filipino households.

DUBAI — The US on Tuesday ordered non-emergency government personnel and their family members to leave Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq and Jordan and closed several diplomatic missions across the region as tensions with Iran escalated.
