PNP tightens counter-intelligence vs possible foreign-backed spies within ranks
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it has stepped up counter-intelligence measures across all its units to prevent infiltration and espionage within its ranks.
“We are taking proactive steps to ensure that all the information that includes efforts and plans relating to peace and order and national security are protected,” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.
“We have been doing our best to insulate the PNP from any form of foreign interference or recruitment,” he added.
This is following reports that three Filipinos detained for alleged Chinese-linked espionage previously worked in the Department of National Defense, Philippine Navy, and had close access to a Philippine Coast Guard member.
“The recent admission of Filipino nationals involved in foreign-directed espionage is a wake-up call for us to be extra-careful and to sustain the efforts in instilling professionalism in the organization that is anchored on patriotism and loyalty to our country and its people,” Nartatez said.
According to Nartatez, the PNP is now coordinating closely with the National Security Council (NSC) and other intelligence agencies for better information sharing.
The PNP chief also noted that the police organization has established a confidential reporting mechanism for its members.
Nartatez expressed support for the position of the NSC and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to enhance the legal and institutional frameworks for the protection of national security from evolving threats. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
