Comelec will not adopt 4-day workweek amid poll preparations
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will not adopt the four-day workweek due to the ongoing preparations for three elections scheduled for this year.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said the poll body cannot implement the condensed work schedule, citing the ongoing nationwide voter registration as well as their preparations for three elections in 2026, Super Radyo dzBB's Manny Vargas reported on Tuesday.
This includes the special elections in the second district of Antipolo City scheduled for March 14; the Bangsamoro parliamentary elections eyed for September; and the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls slated for November 2.
Despite not adopting the policy, Garcia said the Comelec started implementing several energy-saving measures including turning off of air-conditioning units one to two hours before the end of office hours and unplugging unused appliances.
Employees are likewise encouraged to practice carpooling and to avoid traveling for meetings if it can be conducted online.
Last week, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced that a four-day workweek will temporarily be implemented in offices under the executive department starting March 9.
Marcos also directed government offices and agencies to find ways to conserve energy.
