MMDA prepares Libreng Sakay for March 19 transport strike
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is readying to roll out a free ride program to assist commuters in anticipation of the scheduled transport strike on Thursday.
MMDA general manager Nicholas Torre III on Wednesday said the agency is closely coordinating with security forces and other government units to minimize the impact of the strike on the riding public.
“MMDA is closely coordinating with the security forces para sa kung ano man ang mga logistics na kanilang kailangan para ma-alleviate ang impact nitong tigil-pasada,” Torre said at Kapihan sa Manila Hotel forum.

“In particular, we are readying our buses and other transport vehicles para makapagbigay ng libreng sakay (to offer free rides),” he added.
Amid rising fuel prices, Torre said the MMDA is intensifying its push for active mobility by encouraging commuters to walk or bike to work.
The agency recently launched end-of-trip facilities, including shower areas for cyclists, to support those opting for more sustainable modes of transport.
MMDA is also collaborating with Manila Electric Company (Meralco) for solar panel installation, as well as plans to develop solar-powered waiting sheds and walkways, according to Torre.
The agency also supports waste-to-energy projects as a sustainable solution to both energy generation and waste management.
On traffic management, Torre noted improvements driven by the digitization of traffic signal systems through their command center, which has enabled faster incident response within five minutes.
The MMDA is also coordinating infrastructure works across Metro Manila to reduce congestion caused by these projects. —AOL, GMA Integrated News
