Jeepney, PUV drivers, operators get cash aid from DSWD, DOTr

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has started distributing fuel subsidies to public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators amid the rising fuel prices due to the Middle East tensions.

According to a report of GMA Integrated News’ Joseph Morong on Wednesday, initial payouts were rolled out on Tuesday at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) where nearly 30 bus operators received P10,000 per unit

The distribution was led by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. with other concerned government officials noting that the program is being implemented nationwide.

Buses, jeepneys, taxis, UV Express, filcabs, and transport network vehicle services (TNVS) are included in the initial fuel subsidy payout.

Tricycle drivers and delivery service workers are expected to receive assistance after Holy Week, according to the DOTr.

The fuel subsidy amounts ranged from P1,500 to P10,000 for operators and drivers depending on their vehicle type.

The DOTr said the subsidy, funded with P2.5 billion, targets over 200,000 beneficiaries. Distribution will be carried out through fuel cards, bank transfers, e-wallets, or cash and checks.

Funds for the fuel subsidy are released if global oil prices reach at least $80 per barrel for one calendar month, subject to certification from the Department of Energy (DOE).

DSWD

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday expanded its P5,000 cash assistance payout to jeepney drivers in Metro Manila under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program.

In Quezon City, at least 4,687 jeepney drivers were targeted to receive P5,000 each at the Quezon Memorial Circle, according to a report of James Agustin.

Long lines of drivers were observed waiting to claim the financial aid early in the morning.

At the payout site, validation of beneficiaries was ongoing before the distribution of cash aid. Drivers were required to present a valid driver’s license and a photocopy for verification.

However, some encountered issues during the validation process such as discrepancies in their personal details or absence from the official list of beneficiaries.

A help desk with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and DSWD personnel was set up to address these concerns.

The cash assistance payout for tricycle drivers in Metro Manila started on March 17, while for transport network vehicle service (TNVS) drivers on Tuesday.

Delivery riders in Metro Manila are expected to receive the cash aid on Thursday and Friday, while motorcycle taxi drivers will receive it on Saturday.

The AICS program for affected transport workers will expand nationwide after Holy Week, the DSWD earlier said.
