Luzon, Mindanao grids stable; Visayas may face yellow alert in Q2
The power grids of Luzon and Mindanao are expected to remain stable, but the Visayas grid may face a yellow alert in the second quarter of 2026, a study said.
The Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) said a yellow alert could be raised when power reserves become thin, especially during periods of high demand.
The group identified the Visayas grid as the most vulnerable, as it still relies on power supply from Luzon and Mindanao.
It added that the Luzon grid is likely to operate normally as long as there are no major disruptions in power generation.
The Mindanao grid is also expected to remain stable due to its strong power generation capacity, the group said.
The study warned that electricity demand could rise during the summer months, which may strain supply, along with possible impacts from fuel availability used in power generation.
The analysis was based on power supply and demand outlook data from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and the Department of Energy (DOE).
Both agencies have yet to issue statements regarding the findings, as of press time. — GMA Regional TV
