PNP urges public to stay safe from drowning during summer vacation activities

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday reminded the public to practice safety measures while engaging in water activities this summer amid an increase in drowning incidents recorded last year.

“Parents should always supervise their children. Swim only in designated areas, check for lifeguards, wear life vests when needed, and avoid risky behavior such as diving in shallow water or swimming alone,” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.

“Simple precautions can prevent accidents and save lives,” he added.

Data from the PNP showed that from April 1 to May 31, 2025, a total of 151 drowning incidents were recorded nationwide during the summer vacation period.

This was higher than the 90 cases reported during the same period in 2024, an increase of 61 incidents or nearly 68%, according to the PNP.

Of the total cases in 2025, 141 resulted in deaths, seven individuals were injured, and another seven survived unharmed.

The PNP advised the public to stay hydrated, take breaks in shaded areas, and ensure children and inexperienced swimmers are kept within arm’s reach at all times.

Authorities urged beachgoers and resort visitors to follow posted safety guidelines and remain mindful of water conditions to reduce the risk of drowning.

The PNP said it will continue its awareness campaigns and preventive measures to ensure communities remain safe while enjoying summer activities at beaches, pools, and resorts.

“Let’s enjoy the season safely and look out for each other. Ang bawat pag-iingat, maliit man o malaki, ay nakakatulong upang maiwasan ang aksidente,” Nartatez said.
