As several Filipinos are set to travel for the Holy Week break, authorities are reminding the public not to overlook home safety.

Leaving a house unattended, even for a few days, can increase the risk of theft, fire, and other accidents.

A report from Unang Balita highlighted practical steps households can take to keep their homes secure while away:

Secure doors and entry points

Before leaving, make sure all doors, windows, and gates are properly locked. Double-checking entry points is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent break-ins.

Homeowners are also advised to avoid leaving spare keys in obvious places such as under doormats or plant pots.

Turn off appliances and LPG tanks

Unplugging electrical appliances and switching off the main power supply can help prevent fire incidents. This is especially important for devices that may overheat when left unattended.

For households using liquefied petroleum gas, regulators should be turned off before leaving to avoid leaks that could lead to explosions or fires.

Avoid announcing your absence

Posting travel plans in real time on social media can alert potential intruders that a house is empty. Authorities advise sharing vacation updates only after returning home.

Keeping a low profile about travel schedules adds an extra layer of security.

Ask someone to watch your home

If possible, inform a trusted neighbor, friend, or relative about your trip. They can periodically check the house, collect mail, or monitor any unusual activity.

Some homeowners also install lights on timers to make it appear that someone is inside.

Store valuables securely

Important items such as gadgets, cash, and documents should be kept in secure places before leaving. Locking cabinets or using safes can reduce the risk of loss in case of break-ins.

Taking a few precautionary steps before going on vacation can significantly reduce risks at home. While travel offers a chance to relax, ensuring that your house is safe allows for greater peace of mind while you are away. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
