The Department of Energy (DOE) said Sunday the Philippines recorded a 145.43 megawatt reduction in electricity consumption during the observance of Earth Hour 2026

In a statement, the DOE said the breakdown of the public participation per region last March 28, Saturday, 8:30p.m. to 9:30 p.m. is as follows:

• Luzon: 75.25 MW

• Visayas: 66.6 MW

• Mindanao: 3.58 MW

In his message, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged a wider importance for the annual celebration.

“Earth Hour reminds us that the way energy is used affects everyone, and it reveals not only what we do, but the kind of future we wish to achieve for our nation and our planet.)

He also urged the country to unite to ensure the Filipino spirit remains bright– to make sure that there is hope for the future.

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said although Earth Hour is symbolic, its real importance is to encourage sustainable change in everyone’s behavior.

“Earth Hours showed when Filipinos stand as one, we can accomplish meaningful lower consumption of energy. Most importantly, this is a reminder that saving energy is not only for one hour, but something we should strive for everyday.)

The DOE asked the public to continue the spirit of Earth Hour way beyond the annual observance by incorporating it thru energy-efficient practices at home and in the workplace,

“The continuous saving of energy will not only reduce the amount of what we spend on electricity, but also supports the country’s efforts in energy security, affordability, and in taking care of the environment,” the DOE said. —RF, GMA Integrated News
