MTRCB reminds PUVs: Show only ‘G’ and ‘PG’ content
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has ordered public utility vehicle (PUV) operators to show only “G” (General Patronage) and “PG” (Parental Guidance) films on their vehicles amid the expected surge of passengers during the Holy Week.
In a memorandum dated March 24, the MTRCB reminded operators of buses, sea vessels, and other common carriers to strictly comply with rules on age-appropriate content shown to passengers.
“The Board reminds all common carrier operators that only motion pictures and/or trailers classified by the Board as for general patronage or ‘G’ and parental guidance or ‘PG’ shall be exhibited inside such common carriers,” the memorandum said.
MTRCB chairperson Lala Sotto explained that a “G” rating means content is suitable for all audiences, including children, while “PG” indicates that some scenes may require parental guidance.
The directive covers all forms of public transport that screen films or video content during trips, including long-haul buses and sea vessels.
To enforce the policy, Sotto said the agency’s monitoring and inspection unit will continue conducting on-ground checks. The unit recently carried out inspections to remind operators and passengers of the allowable content rules.
Sotto said the move aims to protect commuters – especially minors – from exposure to inappropriate material during travel.
“As families travel together this Holy Week, we want to ensure that what is shown inside public transport remains safe and appropriate for all passengers, especially children,” she said.
“By showing only ‘G’ and ‘PG’ content, operators help create a more respectful and family-friendly environment for everyone on board,” she added.
The reminder forms part of the agency’s broader campaign for “Responsableng Panonood (Responsible Viewing),” which promotes responsible and guided media consumption.
The MTRCB warned that violators may face suspension or cancellation of permits, as well as fines and other administrative penalties.
Sotto also joined the nation in observing Holy Week and urged Filipinos to reflect and find meaning in the occasion.
“This is a time for reflection and togetherness. May the observance of the Holy Week bring hope, renewed strength, compassion and solidarity to all,” she said. — JMA, GMA News
