LTFRB to PUV drivers: Keep calm, avoid road rage

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Tuesday reminded drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) to observe discipline and restraint as they journey to their destinations during the Holy Week.

In a statement, LTFRB chair Vigor Mendoza II told PUV drivers that they are in charge of the safety of their passengers and that they should exercise maximum restraint to avoid road rage incidents.

He also urged transport companies and operators to do their share in reminding their drivers to observe road safety rules and regulations that include anti-road rage measures.

“Learn from the lessons of road rage incidents in the past. Wala itong naibubungang maganda at sisirain lang nito ang araw nyo. Hindi kabawasan sa pagkatao at pagka-lalaki ang pagpapasensya para sa kapakanan ng ating pamilya (This will not do you any good and will just ruin your day. Be more patient for the sake of your family),” Mendoza said.

“Mataas na ang presyo ng diesel at gasolina, huwag na ninyong dagdagan ng gastos sa pang-piyansa (Prices of diesel and gasoline are already high, and don’t add bail money to your expenses).”

Over the weekend, the LTFRB granted special permits to 1,297 passenger bus units across the country to ensure that there are enough PUVs for the expected influx of passengers during the Holy Week break.

Mendoza also ordered the LTFRB’s regional directors to intensify their inspection of passenger buses and other PUVs to ensure road safety during the peak season.

Aside from roadworthiness inspections, he said the mental and physical conditions of bus drivers must also be ensured.

Mendoza called on bus drivers and all motorists to keep their cool as road rage altercations will only spoil their Holy Week break.

“Remember that Holy Week is also a time for reflection. And one of the best ways to observe Semana Santa is to exercise discipline and self-control in times of any incident that challenges your character,” he added. — JMA, GMA News
