Experts call for vaccinations ahead of flu season

Healthcare experts advised Filipinos to be on top of their flu vaccinations due to an anticipated rise in cases during the rainy season.

In a statement from the Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP), global health and immunology expert Dr. Melvin Sanicas said that early vaccinations are important as the body takes around two weeks to build protective antibodies after inoculation.

Experts note that the spread of influenza year-round puts vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and immunocompromised, at risk, with treatments amounting between P10,000 to P30,000 for hospital stays.

“Influenza can lead to complications such as pneumonia and effects on the heart and brain, which may result in hospitalization or even death,” Sanicas shared.

He noted that influenza continue to develop and evolve globally.

In January, the healthcare sector had kept watch of cases for the Superflu or Influenza AH3N2 Subclade K, which had 63 cases in total last 2025.

In line with this, PHAP pushed for stronger vaccination campaigns to protect the public against viral diseases such as the flu.

“Protecting communities from flu and other vaccine-preventable diseases requires a united effort from government, health workers, and private sector partners to ensure timely vaccine access and strong public awareness, especially ahead of the rainy season,” said PHAP Executive Director Teodoro Padilla.

PHAP advised the public to remain on top of their vaccinations and remain protected, especially during the travel peak season. —AOL, GMA News
