There is no tsunami threat to the country following a strong earthquake that hit Indonesia Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

Based on preliminary earthquake parameters, the earthquake hit at 6:48 a.m. It was located at Molucca Sea and has a depth of 76 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS said that after evaluation "no destructive tsunami threat exists" to the Philippines.

The earthquake that struck in the Northern Molucca Sea off Indonesia's Ternate island damaged some buildings and triggered tsunami waves.

US tsunami warning authorities said hazardous tsunamis were possible along the coasts of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia within 1,000 km (620 miles) of the epicenter. —AOL, GMA News
