BI: Viral female passenger offloaded for inconsistent statements about trip

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) deferred the traveler of a female passenger at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) due to alleged inconsistencies in her statements about her overseas trip.

In a statement on Thursday, the BI said the traveler was bound for Hongkong when immigration officers flagged her for a secondary inspection “due to observed inconsistencies in her statements.”

The BI said the traveler – whose interview about her deferred trip went viral – was allegedly unable to clearly state her purpose of travel, provide a concrete itinerary, and provide sufficient proof that she can fund her stay abroad.

The decision to offload her was made in line with protective measures to ensure she will not be trafficked or illegally recruited.

“She could not explain where she would go or what she would specifically do upon arrival. These are classic indicators of illegal recruitment or potential trafficking,” BI commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.

“We understand public sentiment, especially when such cases go viral, but our foremost duty by law as part of the IACAT is to protect Filipinos from falling victim to exploitation,” he added.

The BI also reminded the public to only coordinate with licensed agencies through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) for legitimate overseas employment opportunities.

“Leaving the country without the proper documents exposes our kababayans to abuse, illegal work conditions, and human trafficking. We urge everyone to follow legal processes designed for their safety,” Viado said. — JMA, GMA News
