PNP: 7 drowning incidents recorded so far amid Holy Week

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported seven drowning-related incidents during Holy Week as of Good Friday.

“As of 6:00 a.m. today, seven drowning-related incidents have been recorded in various swimming areas,” the PNP said in a statement.

“These are being addressed by authorities, with police and rescue units promptly responding to assist those affected,” it added.

The PNP has yet to provide information on the number of possible survivors or fatalities in these drowning incidents.

With more than 99,000 personnel deployed, the police organization is currently under full alert status to ensure public safety during the peak travel and pilgrimage period.

Of the total number, around 20,000 officers have been assigned to major airports and seaports, while 12,400 are stationed at pilgrimage sites and churches.

Some 7,700 personnel are deployed to beaches and resorts, 10,000 to commercial areas, 3,500 for border control, 12,000 for rapid response and special operations, and 22,501 for other law enforcement duties.

“Ngayong Good Friday, paalala namin sa lahat: Laging maging maingat at alisto sa paligid,” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.

(This Good Friday, we remind everyone: Always be careful and alert in your surroundings.)

“Alagaan ang sarili at ang bawat miyembro ng pamilya, at siguraduhing ligtas ang inyong paglalakbay at pagdadasal,” he added.

(Take care of yourself and each member of your family and make sure your travels and vigils are safe.)

The public is advised to avoid risky water activities, secure personal belongings, follow traffic rules, and report any suspicious activities to authorities or through the emergency hotline 911. —VAL, GMA News
