PH to continue engagements with Myanmar amid election of new president

Malacañang said that the Philippines will continue its engagements with Myanmar amid the election of Min Aung Hlaing as president.

In a statement on Friday, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said that Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro will continue to consult with the country as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar.

“The Philippines remains committed to support ASEAN’s collective efforts and encourages renewed momentum toward the full and effective implementation of the Five Point Consensus, particularly in achieving the cessation of violence and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar,” read the statement.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing was elected president of Myanmar on Friday after a parliamentary vote.

Min Aung Hlaing had landed the position through a huge margin of 429 votes against retired general Nyo Saw’s 126. —LDF, GMA News
