The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday said the country’s observance of Good Friday was peaceful.

In a statement, the PNP said Catholic communities observed masses and processions in an orderly and respectful manner, reflecting “cooperation and discipline of the public and local leaders.”

The PNP said it remains on full alert for Black Saturday.

The PNP said officers were deployed in key areas to assist travelers and those observing the day’s traditions, emphasizing that simple precautions—like planning trips ahead, following traffic rules, and supervising children near water—help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Among the traditions observed in Manila on Good Friday was the procession of the Jesus Nazareno image, which took 13 hours, 18 minutes, and 37 seconds to finish. A total of 517,650 devotees participated in the procession. The PNP, with 3,160 personnel deployed, said it "successfully ensured the safety and security of the Good Friday procession."

More Filipinos are expected to visit tourist destinations and resorts as Easter Sunday is approaching.

With this, PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reminded the public to plan their trips ahead and follow the PNP’s reminders for safe travel.

The PNP said its continued presence supports the PNP Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations and the directives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“The PNP urges everyone to stay cautious and observe Holy Week safely, ensuring a peaceful and worry-free period of reflection and devotion. Kung may anumang emergency, huwag mag-atubiling tumawag sa Unified 911 o lumapit sa pinakamalapit na presinto,” said Nartatez.

(If there is any emergency, do not hesitate to call Unified 911 or go to the nearest precinct.)

Light traffic flow along major expressways meanwhile was observed on Black Saturday morning, according to traffic updates by toll roads operators.

Traffic is expected to build up this weekend as vacationers head back to their homes in time for work on Monday. —KG, GMA News
