OCD urges face mask use amid poor air quality in Metro Manila
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has advised residents in Metro Manila to wear face masks when going outside due to deteriorating air quality.
In a statement reposted by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the agency strongly recommended mask use, particularly for vulnerable groups such as individuals with respiratory conditions, children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
“Those who need to go outside are advised to wear face masks and limit prolonged exposure to polluted air,” the statement read.
Residents were also advised to keep windows closed, stay hydrated, and seek medical attention in case of breathing difficulties.
Earlier, infectious disease expert Dr. Rontgene Solante warned that prolonged exposure to smog and poor air quality may lead to respiratory illnesses, including chemical pneumonia caused by toxic air pollutants.
Several parts of Metro Manila are currently covered in thick smog following a massive fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill.
