NBI reviewing Baste Duterte remarks, may issue subpoena

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag on Friday said the bureau is reviewing the remarks made by Davao Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte regarding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and may issue a subpoena against him, if needed.

“’Yung mga ganyang bagay sasabihin na naman metaphor or what. But as our mandate, we [are] always mindful of the security of our president at babantayan natin ‘yan at kailangan natin siguro imbestigahan ng mas maayos,” he said in John Consulta’s video.

(They’ll say that this is a metaphor again or what. But as our mandate, we are always mindful of the security of our president, and we will watch over that and we probably need to investigate it more thoroughly.)

“We are reviewing it at tinitignan natin kung kinakailangang gawin ‘yan. But kung umabot sa ganoong sitwasyon, we will not hesitate na magpadala ng subpoena para siya mismo ang mag bigay linaw,” he added.

(We are reviewing it and we are looking at whether it is necessary to do that. But if it reaches that situation, we will not hesitate to issue a subpoena so that he himself can provide clarification.)

Matibag noted a pattern, first with Vice President Sara Duterte and now with Mayor Sebastian Duterte.

“Noon, si Vice President Sara. Ngayon si Baste naman at sinasabi lagi, ‘yung ulo lagi ng presidente ‘yung binabanggit nila,” he said.

(Before, it was Vice President Sara. Now it’s Baste, and they always keep mentioning the head of the president.)

To recall, Sara Duterte in 2024 said she ordered someone to kill Marcos if an alleged plot against her suceeds. She later said that her statement was “maliciously taken out of logical context.”

Meanwhile, Sebastian Duterte recently said during a speech that they only wanted the president’s head while talking about the corruption in the country.

“Tama na yan. Okay na ’yan. Siguro ’yung mga anak niyo makakapag-aral sa abroad. You can eat at very nice restaurants. Tama na ’yan. It’s okay. Isang ulo lang naman ang kailangan namin, ang ulo ni Bongbong Marcos,” Duterte said.
