Palace assures all systems go for ASEAN 2026 Summit

Malacañang assured Thursday that the Philippines is ready to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2026 Summit in Cebu next month.

"According sa ating National Organizing Committee chair, si ES (Executive Secretary) Ralph Recto, nag-report siya at nag-update siya sa Pangulo at all systems go. So handa tayo," Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said in a press briefing.

(According to our NOC chair, ES Ralph Recto, he reported and gave updates to the President and it's all systems go. So we are ready.)

The Philippines chairs the ASEAN in 2026 with the theme "Navigating Our Future, Together," highlighting regional unity, resilience, and a commitment to a people-centered community, focusing on navigating challenges through collective action.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. had ordered a recalibration of the country's hosting of the ASEAN 2026 Summits and Related Summits, scaling down non-essential bloc activities to save on expenses and "'focus on the most important.'"

This was due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East that has triggered surges in fuel prices.

Recto earlier said at least 650 preparatory meetings would be conducted online.

He had issued a memorandum to host government agencies to inform all their counterparts that all preparatory meetings—from Working Group, Senior Officials to Ministerial—will now be held virtually. — VDV, GMA News
