PNP to receive 17,000 ‘AI-ready’ body cameras

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said it is set to acquire around 17,000 body-worn cameras as part of efforts to improve transparency and accountability in police operations.

In an ambush interview, PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the devices are “AI-ready” and will be directly connected to a central system, preventing tampering or deletion of footage.

“We'll be soon getting our 17,000 units of body-worn cameras,” Nartatez said.

“Puwedeng gawin na natatawagan din, at the same time AI-ready, at the same time hindi magagalaw 'yun kasi direct 'yun sa system na makikita sa ating system at nagsa-save at hindi mabubura,” he added.

(It can be called, it is AI-ready, and it cannot be tampered because it is directly connected to our visible system and is saved, making it undeletable.)

Nartatez said current response time in Metro Manila averages between three minutes and four minutes, with further improvements targeted once new equipment is deployed.

Meanwhile, Nartatez said tourist police will be intensified as he cited improvements in the deployment in Bohol.

“Iisa-isahin natin ang bawat probinsya (We will do it in every province). The regional directors, the provincial directors are double-timing in making sure that our tourists are protected,” he said. —AOL, GMA News
