A lawyer for Second Gentleman Manases Carpio on Monday said that the reported P2 billion total inflow into his bank for two decades, as reported before the House Committee on Justice's impeachment hearing on Vice President Sara Duterte, should only be P2 million.

At a news conference, Atty. Peter Paul Danao said "a systems glitch" at the Bank of the Philippine Islands caused the discrepancy.

“Kung titingnan niyo po ‘yung report, na nakuha rin namin sa social media, kung bubusisiin niyo po ‘yung report na ‘yun, meron po do’n nakalagay sa bandang dulo na may P2 billion do’n na sinabi ng BPI [ay] system glitch,” Carpio’s lawyer said.

(If you look at the report, which we also got from social media, if you look closely at that report, it was indicated that P2 billion there was a system glitch, according to BPI.)

“Nagkamali po ang BPI. Hindi dapat P2 billion ang andoon, nasa amount na ‘yun,” he added.

(BPI made a mistake. There shouldn’t have been P2 billion indicated there.)

Danao said the discrepancy and the glitch were not disclosed. He said what was highlighted was the over P6 billion in transactions, which he called a lie.

BPI, in response, said that it does not disclose client information or transaction details, except as required under applicable legal processes.

“As a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)-supervised institution, Bank of the Philippine Islands adheres strictly to all applicable laws and regulations, including those governing bank secrecy, data privacy, and consumer protection,” the bank said.

BPI also said it “complies with required reporting and regulatory engagements through the proper authorities, and provides relevant clarifications when necessary.”

According to Jonathan Andal's report on "24 Oras," a copy of the AMLC report submitted to the committee indicated that BPI was taking back information on Carpio's 13 covered transactions because it was wrong, citing a systems bug.

Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon, a member of the House justice committee, denied that the discrepancy and glitch were kept from the public. He said it was included in the report. –Giselle Ombay/NB, GMA News
