LTFRB summons 6 bus operators for not offering fare discounts

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned six bus operators for allegedly failing to provide fare discounts to their passengers under the service contracting program rules.

In a statement on Monday, LTFRB chair Vigor Mendoza II said the issuance of the show case order (SCO) was based on reports that the bus conductors of the passenger buses repeatedly did not honor the provisions for fare discounts.

Under the service contracting program rules, all passengers are entitled to a 20% discount while senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and students enjoy a 40% discount.

The bus conductors of the six bus operators allegedly did not follow the fare discount system.

“This would be an opportunity for them to explain and on the part of the LTFRB, this would be an opportunity to send a strong message on accountability for not following the fare discount rules under the service contracting program,” Mendoza said.

The SCO mandated the bus operators to bring the bus drivers and contractors involved, and to submit a written explanation as to why their participation in the program should not be suspended or cancelled.

Each of the summoned operators were given a copy of the complaint and proof of the alleged failure to grant the fare discount.

Mendoza warned that bus operators would be penalized if they ignore the scheduled hearing on May 18.

“This should serve as a warning to those enrolled in this program that we are monitoring the implementation of the program and any attempt to ignore the agreement will be dealt with accordingly,” he added. — JMA, GMA News
