The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved on third and final reading the proposed National Land Use Act, a measure that has languished in Congress for at least 28 years.

The bill, under House Bill No. 8466, was approved with 224 votes in favor, three against, and no abstentions.

According to the committee report, the measure seeks to address issues on land conversion, climate change, the establishment of a national land use database and geohazard mapping, as well as disaster risk reduction and management.

The bill also provides a national framework for the optimal and sustainable use of the country’s land resources, consistent with the principles of sustainable development.—MCG, GMA News
