Cardinal David calls on the public to 'resist manipulation, verify claims'
Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David has called on Filipinos to be discerning with the issues linked to the events that have unraveled in the past few days involving democratic institutions.
"The events of the past days remind us that democratic institutions are tested precisely in difficult and politically charged moments such as this," said David in a statement posted in social media.
"Many of our people are tired of noise, propaganda, and partisan shouting matches. What they long for is clarity. They want to hear facts discussed soberly, evidence weighed carefully, and public officials acting with integrity and maturity," he added.
The prelate was referring to the days that led to the second time Vice President Sara Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives, the change in Senate leadership, and the issuance by the International Criminal Court (ICC) of the arrest warrant for Sen. Bato dela Rosa.
"For this reason, I hope the constitutional processes now set in motion will be allowed to take their course responsibly and without unnecessary obstruction. Institutions exist precisely for moments like this — not to inflame division, but to help a nation seek accountability, fairness, and truth through lawful means rather than through mob opinion or political theater," David said.
"This is also a time for citizens to be discerning. We should resist manipulation from every side, avoid amplifying unverified claims, and refuse to reduce complex issues into partisan slogans or personalities," he added.
Cardinal David underscored that the country's "democracy becomes fragile when public trust erodes."
"But it becomes stronger whenever truth is pursued patiently, institutions function properly, and citizens remain morally grounded, vigilant, and engaged in the common good." — BAP, GMA News
