From Palarong Pambansa to podium: Filipino sports stars who began as student-athletes
As the Palarong Pambansa 2026 draws near, the Department of Education (DepEd) is highlighting how the country’s premier school-based sports competition continues to produce athletes who go on to shine on the world stage.
In a recent post, DepEd underscored that many Filipino athletes who rose to international prominence first made their mark in the Palarong Pambansa.
Among them is EJ Obiena, who once competed as a Palaro silver medalist before becoming one of the world’s top pole vaulters.
Obiena later rose to World No. 2 and made history as the first Filipino to win a medal in the World Athletics Championships, while also becoming a multi-gold medalist in regional meets.
Gymnastics icon Carlos Yulo also traces his early competitive years to the Palaro, where he dominated as a multi-gold medalist from 2009 to 2013. He went on to become a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the country’s first world champion in artistic gymnastics.
Also emerging from the same grassroots system are younger standouts such as Karl Eldrew Yulo and Elaiza Yulo, who have both collected medals in international junior competitions after their exposure in local and national meets.
Beyond gymnastics and athletics, basketball prospect Kenji 'Chog' Moral built his reputation through strong performances in the Palarong Pambansa, later earning recognition as a Junior MPBL Most Valuable Player and a member of the Gilas Pilipinas U18 team.
Track athletes are also among those making the leap from Palaro to international competition. Anthony Canaso, for instance, set a new secondary boys’ 1,500-meter record in the Palaro before winning multiple gold medals in the ASEAN School Games. Similarly, Jhul Ian Cañalita established new meet records in long-distance events and went on to claim medals in regional competitions.
In tennis, Tennielle Madis rose from being a Palaro champion to representing the Philippines in international tournaments, including the Southeast Asian Games and the Billie Jean King Cup.
Volleyball has also produced rising stars from the Palaro pipeline, including Sam Cantada, who later earned Most Valuable Player honors in the UAAP girls’ division, and Rhose Almendralejo, who has been recognized in national youth competitions.
Even in mind sports, young talents like Mary Janelle Tan have transitioned from Palaro success to international podium finishes, including medals in the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships.
DepEd said these athletes reflect how the Palarong Pambansa continues to serve as a vital platform for discovering and developing Filipino talent.
“Sa Palarong Pambansa, marami na ang nakilala bilang next generation ng world-class Filipino athletes at future champs ng bayan,” the agency highlighted.
