Int'l community extends sympathy, support to PH after deadly Mindanao earthquake

Members of the international community put aside their differences as they extended messages of sympathy and support for the Philippines after a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Mindanao on Monday morning.

“The U.S. Embassy extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected by the earthquake in Mindanao on June 8, 2026,” a statement from the United States Embassy said on Monday.

“We continue to monitor the situation closely in coordination with Philippine authorities and stand ready to support Philippine-led response efforts,” it added.

The Japanese Embassy in Manila shared a message from Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae who expressed her condolences to the victims, families, and affected communities of the June 8 earthquake in the Mindanao region.

“I am deeply saddened by reports that the major earthquake in the southern Philippines today caused damage, including the collapse of buildings. I extend my heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their lives and to their bereaved families, and my sincere sympathies to all those affected,” she said.

The Japanese leader assured that, “Japan stands ready to provide all possible assistance that the Philippines may need, based on local needs. Japan always stands with the people pf the Philippines.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently completed a four-day state visit to Japan.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Embassy sent a “Message of Solidarity with the Filipino People”.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the residents of Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and neighboring communities affected by this tragedy. We mourn the loss of lives and stand in solidarity with all those who are grieving, injured, displaced, or facing the aftermath of the disaster,” the message said.

“Our thoughts are with the affected families, communities, and the dedicated first responders and volunteers working tirelessly to provide assistance and support.”

“During this difficult time, the people of Israel stand with the Filipino people in hope, resilience, and solidarity as affected communities begin the journey toward recovery,” the Israeli Embassy concluded.

Meanwhile, Australian Ambassador Marc Innes-Brown, via his embassy’s account on Facebook posted: “Our thoughts go out to those affected by today’s earthquakes off Mindanao. Our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones. Wishing the injured and communities affected a speedy recovery.”

The Chinese Embassy in Manila posted on its social media account, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake in Mindanao. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Philippine people, mourn those who lost their lives, and express our sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster.”

“The Embassy of Canada extends its deepest sympathy to the residents of Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and nearby provinces in southern Mindanao affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake today, June 8, 2026,” the Canadian Embassy shared on its Facebook account.

“We mourn the loss of lives and we stand with those who are grieving, injured, or displaced. Canada stands ready to coordinate closely with Philippine government agencies, humanitarian partners, and the international community to help meet urgent needs,” it assured.

The German Embassy Manila shared it "is deeply saddened by the earthquake that struck the regions of Mindanao on 8 June."

"We extend our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies to the victims, their loved ones, and all communities affected. As recovery efforts continue, Germany stands in solidarity with the people of the Philippines during this difficult time." it said.

The Embassy of Ukraine expressed "its sincere condolences in connection with the earthquake of 8 June in the Mindanao region."

"We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, reaffirm our solidarity with the people of the Philippines, and highly appreciate the efforts of the local authorities and emergency services in responding to the situation," the embassy said.

The Italian Embassy in Manila, meanwhile, conveyed “its sincere condolences and sympathy to all those affected. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the communities facing the aftermath of this tragic event.”

It added, “We stand in solidarity with the people of the Republic of the Philippines and express our support for all those involved in relief and recovery efforts.”

In its message, the French Embassy shared, “France is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the damage caused by the earthquake that struck Mindanao this morning.”

“France extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and expresses its full solidarity with the Filipino people and the authorities responding to this disaster.”

The New Zealand Embassy expressed “its sincere sympathy to the people of Mindanao in the wake of the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake. We stand in solidarity with the Filipino people at this difficult time.” —RF, GMA News
