AFP on 18 individuals in maleta allegations: Don't call them ex-Marines

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has called on the media and the public to use accurate descriptions when referring to individuals alleging that some politicians received suitcases filled with millions of cash.

In a statement, AFP Public Affairs Office chief Colonel Xerxes Trinidad said the use of the “former Marines” nickname may have created the impression that the military institution was involved in the issues.

“May we respectfully request accuracy in referring to the individuals involved in the ongoing Senate proceedings,” he said on Friday.

Trinidad pointed out that the individuals concerned were no longer in active military service at the time of the acts and allegations being discussed.

"These were undertaken in their private capacities and not on behalf of the Armed Forces of the Philippines," he said.

The AFP also clarified that not all of the individuals involved were former members of the Philippine Marine Corps.

"For accuracy, we respectfully encourage the use of the individuals' names, or simply refer to them as witnesses, affiants, or former staff/bodyguards of the concerned personalities, as appropriate," Trinidad said.

In February, the Philippine Navy said that four of the 18 individuals were never members of the Navy nor the Philippine Marine Corps.

“Majority of the individuals were discharged dishonorably from the service, while others were able to retire in good standing,” Navy spokesperson Captain Marissa Martinez added. —AOL, GMA News
