The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) expressed condolences Thursday to the family of Ateneo basketball player Rene Baterbonia, a former monitored child under the government's Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
In a statement, the DSWD said it was deeply saddened by Baterbonia's death and extended its sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones.
"Lubos naming ipinapaabot ang aming taos-pusong pakikiramay sa kaniyang pamilya sa panahong ito ng pagluluksa," the DSWD said.

According to the DSWD, Baterbonia was among the former beneficiaries of the 4Ps program whose family successfully exited the government's flagship poverty alleviation initiative after experiencing improved living conditions.
The agency described Baterbonia's life as an inspiration to many, citing his dedication to education, discipline, and determination to achieve his dreams.
"Ang buhay ni Rene ay magsisilbing inspirasyon sa marami, lalo na ang kanyang dedikasyon sa pag-aaral, disiplina at pagsisikap na matupad ang kanyang mga pangarap," the DSWD said.
