Tab Baldwin, others no-show as PNP-CIDG probes Baterbonia, Adili deaths

Ateneo de Manila University men's basketball team coach Tab Baldwin and other members of the university's top management did not show up Monday as the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group starts its probe into the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

"We subpoenaed five members of the Ateneo management, the only one who appeared is Mr. Emmanuel Fernandez, head of the Athletics Department. Mr. Baldwin did not appear, Mr. Epok Quimpo did not appear, Fr. Nemy did not appear. However, Ateneo sent their lawyers here para magpaliwanag ng role nila pero hindi sila kasama sa subpoena," Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.

He said they will be issuing a second subpoena.

"Magi-issue kami ng pangalawang subpoena on Friday para maclarify talaga namin ito. As of now, again it is a fact-finding mission. A second absence will warrant contempt if they do not attend," he added.

He further said that the Ateneo players are expected to come on Tuesday.

On Monday morning, Remulla, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director Major General Robert Alexander Morico II, and lawyers representing the ADMU top management arrived at the CIDG office.

"Today, we subpoenaed the top management of the Ateneo basketball team, headed by Coach Tab Baldwin. Last week, the events unfolded, mostly was a fault-finding exercise. Today is a fact-finding exercise," he told reporters.

"We are not here to arrest, we are not here to charge, but merely to gather the facts. Kukunin lang namin talaga kung ano ang nangyari, kung sinong nag-authorize, kung paano sila pumunta, kung sinong nag-order, lahat 'yun kukunin namin yan. I repeat, this is a fact-finding mission, hindi siya fault-finding," he added.

Last week, the CIDG issued subpoenas to the Ateneo coaches and players present during the activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Also summoned were barangay officials in Aurora, hotel staff, and the team's bus driver.
