Jinggoy Estrada suspension started June 22, 2026 — Senate Sec. Bantug
The Senate formally implemented on Monday the 90-day preventive suspension order against Senator Jinggoy Estrada in connection with his pending graft case due to his alleged involvement in the flood control controversy, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. said Thursday.
Bantug said Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian had notified Estrada’s Office of the start of the implementation of the suspension order.
“The Senate President has officially notified the Office of Senator Estrada that the suspension order issued by the Sandiganbayan was implemented beginning Monday, June 22,” Bantug told reporters.
The Sandiganyaban Second Division has imposed a 90-day preventive suspension order against Estrada earlier this month due to a pending graft charge against him over his alleged involvement in the flood control mess.
According to Bantug, the suspension temporarily prohibits Estrada from performing his duties as a lawmaker and from receiving his salary and benefits. Gatchalian earlier said the suspension will include his role as a senator-judge for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“He is suspended from performing the functions of a senator of the republic…personally, sa akin it goes with it that being a senator-judge is also under indictment,” Bantug added.
Estrada’s Office may continue to function despite the suspension, according to Bantug. However, he said he has yet to submit his official recommendation on the issue.
“It’s a suspension penande lite. Automatically, [it will be lifted] after 90 days. The office is still there, the staff can still continue to function because at a certain point, the suspension will be lifted,” he said.
Aside from graft, Estrada facing separate plunder and graft cases in the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division also in relation to the flood control mess.
Moreover, he is also still facing 11 counts of graft cases in connection with his alleged misuse of discretionary Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), all of which are pending since 2014. — RSJ, GMA News
