1 dead, 7 hurt after alleged drunk driver crashes into multiple vehicles on EDSA

One person was killed, and seven others were injured after an allegedly drunk driver crashed into several other vehicles on EDSA early Friday, according to a report from 24 Oras.

CCTV footage from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority showed that at around 5:00 am, a black SUV slammed into a taxi, striking two other motorcycles as the SUV spiraled across EDSA.

The motorcycle passengers were hurled from their seats by the impact.

While the motorcycle riders, drivers, and other passengers were treated for their wounds, one of the passengers of the SUV would eventually die at around 11 am.

The SUV driver hit at least four other cars aside from the vehicles shown in the video.

Marites Timosa, the driver of one of the four cars, said that the black SUV slammed into her pickup truck first before it rammed other vehicles. The Quezon City Police Department (QCPD) Traffic Sector 1 affirmed Timosa’s account.

The QCPD is currently investigating if the SUV driver was under the influence.

“May mga indikasyon na nakainom ang drayber ng SUV, pero sa ngayon, hihingi muna tayo sa Land Transportation Office ng ABA (alcohol breath analyzer) para makasigurado,” said Police Lt. Jason Santoceldes, the commander of QCPD Traffic Sector 1.

(There is some indication that the SUV driver drank, but for now, we are asking the Land Transportation Office for an ABA to be sure.)

The accident caused heavy traffic at the EDSA Balintawak Northbound lane, since the crash took up two lanes. The traffic only eased after the vehicles were towed out of the way at around 6:00 am. –Jean Mangalum/NB, GMA News
