Group calls for systemic reforms, accountability ahead of SONA

A church-led coalition on Friday called for sweeping reforms in the country’s political and economic systems, saying replacing government leaders alone would not address the challenges faced by many Filipinos.

The group called White Ribbon Movement held a press conference in San Juan City and voiced that the country needs “systemic transformation” to end corruption, abuse, and inequality, according to a super radyo dzBb report by Mark Makalalad.

Inter-Religious Leaders’ Council for National Transformation (IRLCNT) chairperson Rev. Jose Colin Bagaforo said there is a need to put an end to abuses in the country and ensure that government policies respond to the needs of ordinary Filipinos.

Bagaforo noted that while the Philippines has already attained upper middle-income country status, many Filipinos continue to consider themselves poor, with many still unemployed.

The group called for policies that would provide a living wage, adequate income opportunities, lower taxes, reduced prices of basic commodities, quality education, accessible healthcare services, and decent housing.

It also urged the government to prioritize the welfare of Filipinos in crafting the national budget.

The White Ribbon Movement likewise pushed for the passage of an anti-political dynasty law and reforms to the country’s party-list system, saying these are necessary to strengthen democratic representation.

The coalition said it would hold a protest during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) to press its demands and encouraged the public to join the mobilization. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA News
