DENR pushes for marine protected areas in West PH Sea

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is pushing to secure ecologically important areas in the Kalayaan Group of Islands, located in the contested West Philippine Sea, as marine protected areas (MPA).

Setting up MPAs in the area will protect local biodiversity through scientific observation and strict enforcement of sustainable practices, ensuring these vital ecosystems stay healthy and continue to sustain their abundant marine life, the DENR said.

“Years of marine scientific research and expeditions have identified key ecosystems in the West Philippine Sea that are vital to Philippine biodiversity. Further, despite climate threats, these habitats are still able to deliver significant ecosystem services for Filipinos all over the country, from fisheries to genetic resources that support the entire West Philippine Sea," said DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna.

The DENR said that it remains committed to supporting ongoing marine research, monitoring, and evaluations in the West Philippine Sea.

"To strengthen long-term marine research, Secretary Cuna also announced that the DENR is moving to operationalize nine Marine Scientific Research Stations, including one on Pag-asa Island. The stations will enhance biodiversity monitoring, support evidence-based policymaking, and improve the management of the country's coastal and marine ecosystems," the DENR said.

The DENR on Tuesday also launched a children’s e-book series aimed at teaching kids aged six to nine about the importance of protecting the West Philippine Sea.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) earlier launched an alliance of fisherfolk aimed at countering false information about the West Philippine Sea.

The Alliance of Fisherfolk for Truthful Information and Narratives on the West Philippine Sea (ATIN WPS) trains fisherfolk on factual and legal issues concerning the contested waters.

In 2016, an international arbitral tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines, invalidating China’s sweeping claims over much of the South China Sea and finding no legal basis for its claim to historic rights within the so-called nine-dash line.

China has rejected the ruling and continues to refuse to recognize it. —LDF, GMA News
