P841 million recovered from flood control scam suspects —DOJ

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday said that P841 million in cash has been recovered from some of those implicated in the flood control controversy and remitted to the national treasury.

Of the amount, P500 million was recovered from former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo.

Meanwhile, DPWH Bulacan District Engineer Henry Alcantara returned P181 million, former DPWH regional director Gerard Opulencia returned P140 million, and contractor Sally Santos returned P20 million.

All these individuals are in the Witness Protection Program of the DOJ.

“The work continues. We will recover the people’s money,” the DOJ said.

The department said it is in close coordination with the Office of the Ombudsman.

“Where the law places a case in our hands, we will build it to the standards that stand in court. That is what the rule of law requires, and what the Filipino people deserve,” it said. — BM, GMA News
