PNP links school violence to family environment, community influences, socmed content

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said family environment, community influences, and exposure to violent content on social media are among factors contributing to violence in schools.

“Hindi lang ang school ang mayroong problema but of course saan ba nanggaling yung bata? And what is the environment that they are into?” PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said at a press briefing.

“For example, some are heavily affected by social media with certain violence and sexual violence et cetera. Nakukuha natin yan, yung environment sa family, community, social media, et cetera,” he added.

Nartatez said the police are working with government agencies such as the Department of Education and the Department of Social Welfare and Development to address the issue following recent incidents involving minors.

Recently,a 13-year-old student died after being stabbed by his classmate inside Las Piñas National High School (LPNHS) last July 31.

Police said the 14-year-old child in conflict with the law (CICL) allegedly stabbed his classmate after accusing him of failing to return the change from a bottled water purchase at the school canteen.

Authorities immediately apprehended the CICL, who has since been placed under the custody of Bahay Pag-asa.

He is set to undergo evaluation to determine whether he acted with discernment. — RSJ, GMA News
