Over 9,000 barangays at risk of landslides, floods, says geosciences bureau

At least 9,096 barangays are at risk of rain-induced landslides and floods, according to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) on Saturday.

The southwest monsoon or Habagat has triggered widespread rains across the country right after tropical cyclone Maymay tore through northern Luzon.

The southwest monsoon is further enhanced by Typhoon Dolphin, which is still outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Citing data from state weather bureau PAGASA, the MGB estimated that from August 8 to August 11, Ilocos Region has the highest number of barangays at risk at 2,933.

Central Luzon has 1,997 barangays at risk of landslides, while Calabarzon has 1,806.

Metro Manila also has a significant number of barangays facing similar risks at 1,403. This includes barangays in the City of Manila, Las Piñas, Makati, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, and more.

The Cordillera Administrative Region has 707 barangays at risk, while Cagayan Valley has 47.

Barangays in these areas could experience rains amounting to 50 mm, according to the MGB.

Meanwhile, 113 barangays in MIMAROPA and 90 barangays in Western Visayas could have rains ranging from 100 mm to 150 mm.

"Residents in listed areas and those nearby or downstream are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions," the MGB said in its Facebook post.

At least six people have been reported dead due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon, as well as tropical cyclones Luis and Maymay, according to the Office of Civil Defense. — VDV, GMA News
