Marcos extends sympathies to Colombia after deadly magnitude 7.4 earthquake

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday extended the Philippines’ condolences to Colombia after the Latin American country was struck by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake.

The earthquake killed at least 100 people, wrecking infrastructure and leaving people trapped under debris.

“The Philippines conveys our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Colombia for the lives lost and the devastation caused by the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake. As a nation along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Filipinos deeply understand the pain and challenges brought by earthquakes,” Marcos said in a statement.

“We stand in solidarity with Colombia as they rise through this ordeal, rebuild livelihoods and communities and recover completely. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” he added.

Both the Philippines and Colombia are geographically located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, making both countries vulnerable to earthquakes.

The deadly tremor came mere days after Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella was sworn into office.

Reuters footage showed the scale of devastation in Colombia, with several buildings collapsing and hospitals being damaged. The latest death toll is at least 132 people. —RF, GMA News
