AFP reports increase in Chinese research vessels in WPS

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday reported that the number of China Coast Guard vessels increased in recent months despite a decline in People's Liberation Army - Navy (PLAN) vessels and China Maritime Militia Vessels in the first quarter of 2026.

"Despite the decline in the People's Liberation Army - Navy (PLAN) vessels from 100 to 78 and China Maritime Militia Vessels (CMMV) from 999 to 850, monitored China Coast Guard vessels (CCGVs) increased from 68 to 77 different ships," the AFP said.

"This observed shift in the deployment pattern of having fewer PLA-N ships and MM vessels and an increase in CCG ships indicates an emphasis on law enforcement functions in the West Philippine Sea," it added.

The AFP also said that there has been an increase in in the monitored number of different research and survey vessels (RSVs) from 33 to 44.

"This included unusual track patterns of 16 RSVs within our maritime zones and other areas of interest. These patterns are likely linked to marine scientific research or hydrographic surveys and indicate a focus on areas near the Kalayaan Island Group, the eastern seaboard of Luzon up to the Balintang and Bashi channels," AFP said.

Amid the reported number of Chinese vessels, the AFP maintained that it remains committed to conducting lawful maritime and air operations, strengthening coordination with partner agencies, and maintaining a credible defense posture.

"We will continue to closely monitor developments and provide timely and accurate information in support of national security and regional stability and will perform our mandate with professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation's sovereignty, sovereign rights, and maritime interests," said the AFP.

The Philippine government refers to parts of the South China Sea within the country's maritime domain as the West Philippine Sea to reinforce its claims.

According to Republic Act No. 12064 or the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime zones of the Philippines on the western side of the Philippine archipelago, including the Luzon Sea, the territorial seas of Bajo de Masinloc in Zambales, and the maritime features of the Kalayaan Island Group in Palawan.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines in its case against China's claims in the South China Sea, saying China's expansive claims had “no legal basis.”
